Hypertrophy refers to the increase in muscle size resulting from resistance training. It occurs when muscle fibers undergo stress, leading to microscopic tears that repair and grow back stronger and larger. Common in bodybuilding, hypertrophy is driven by progressive overload, proper nutrition, and recovery. There are two types: myofibrillar (strength-focused) and sarcoplasmic (size-focused) hypertrophy.
